Physical Science Semester 1

8/21/2019

Policies & procedures

We reviewed the syllabus.  Please see "General Docs" for a copy.  Please have the syllabus signed by tomorrow.  Also please ensure you have a 3 ring binder for this course by Monday.  Thank you, it was a pleasure meeting all of you today.  This will be a great year!

Observation

Today we learned scientists are observant.  To be a good scientist you must be constantly observing.  An observation is the act or process of examining or inspecting something in order to gain information.

We also wrote goals for the semester which were collected for homework/classwork points.  The questions were:

1. How did you do in 8th grade science?

2. How could have you done better?

3. What is your goal for this class?

4. How will you reach this goal?

5. Is there anything you want me to know which will help me, help you do well in this class?

Milk Lab

Today we answered the question "How can observations help us answer a question?" by completing a lab exercise

08/26/2019

Benchmark Assessment

Today I gave the students a benchmark assessment.  The Assessment provides good data which I will use to plan lessons and focus instruction on appropriate topics.

The Homework for today was to complete reading sections 1.1 & 1.2 (already assigned) as well as to answer the assessment questions after section 1.1 and 1.2.

Today we reviewed what we have been doing the past week.  I wanted to make sure everyone has a good grasp on the calculations, especially converting metric figures.  In some classes, I was able to teach all concepts covered in the science skills math packet, most we still have one or two topics to cover.  We will get to them this week.  The homework is to look over the packet and to ensure you are able to complete the topics I covered this week in class.

Also today we completed a hands on metric familiarization activity. Please see resources for examples of problems and answers.

9/3/2019

Item Subtitle

Today we completed a volume/ Temperature lab to reinforce metric conversions. We introduced the concept of significant figures. We had a review sheet to complete for homework which is attached.  The lab document could be found in the resource tab along with significant figure reference page

Test Tuesday

Item Subtitle

I will provide what I call a "go-by" for the test this Friday.  A "go-by" is an outline of the information to concentrate on for the test.  This assessment will cover chaper 1 in the textbook.  Please ensure you can do the science skills math problems and you follow the steps I have been showing you in class.  Please make sure you know what I mean by "show your work".  If you are not confidant in any material in chapter one PLEASE see me during the final module of the day, before school, after school or at lunch time before the test.

1. C

2. D

3. A

4. B

5. A
6. B

7. D

8. B

9. C

10. D

11. Mendeleev knew their relative masses and properties

12. Mendeleev placed elements in the groups where they logically belonged based on their properties

13. The table is called periodic table because the properties of the elements repeat at regular intervals from  row to row

14. The number of elements per period varies because the number of available orbitals increase as the energy level increases

15. An atomic mass is a weighted average of the atomic masses of an element's isotopes.  The distribution of the isotopes determines how much each isotope affects the weighted average.

16. Elements can be classified by their state at room temperature; by whether they exist in nature; and by whether they are metals, nonmetals or metalloids

17. Across a period from left to right, metals become less reactive and nonmetals become more reactive, excluding elements in group 8A.

18. Elements in the same A group do not have identical properties because their valence electrons are in different energy levels

19. The noble gases were difficult to discover because they are colorless, odorless, and very rarely react.

20. 0 metals, 5 non-metals and 3 metalloids

21. Bromine is a liquid and chlorine is a gas.

22. Chlorine is more reactive than bromine because the reactivity of nonmetals increases from top to bottom of a group.

23. Selenium has more in common with sulfur because they are in the same group and have the same number of valence electrons.
